Our Story
SmartSip was born out of a deeply personal experience that sparked a powerful mission: to create a safer world for everyone in social settings. In 2022, our founder’s cousin was drugged while on vacation—a terrifying event that became the catalyst for a life-changing idea. Determined to turn pain into purpose, SmartSip was created: a discreet, color-changing straw that detects common date rape drugs like GHB, Rohypnol, and Ketamine in drinks.
What began as an idea quickly gained momentum. In early 2025, SmartSip won first place in the Ryan Incubator Pitch Competition, a major recognition of the product’s innovation and social impact. Soon after, we were honored to take first place in the Big East Startup Challenge, where SmartSip competed against top ventures from all 11 Big East schools—a victory that validated both the urgency and potential of our mission.
To bring this vision to life, SmartSip is actively collaborating with chemistry researchers at Providence College, who are working in the campus lab to develop a viable, science-backed prototype. The goal? A discreet, reliable straw designed specifically with college students and socially active individuals in mind—simple to use, fast-acting, and accurate in real time.
At SmartSip, we're not just building a product—we're leading a movement—one that empowers people, especially students, to take their safety into their own hands. With every straw, we're one step closer to a future where no one has to question what’s in their drink.
